Nine Rails.
Boundaries that never change. Nine habit buckets organized as a 3+3+3 pyramid — body, mind, spirit. The official taxonomy of what humans do that ZALA reads. Every habit, every routine, every Member output gets a Rail tag.
The rails are not a category list. They are guardrails. The boundaries that prevent drift. In the rails note of 2026-05-14, the definition lands in a single line:
Rails — boundaries that never change. Keep you from going / falling overboard. Rails note · 2026-05-14 · Adham
Nine of them. Mind · Body · Spiritual · Nutrition · Sleep · Social · Environmental · Skills · Breathing. Every habit, every routine, every Vibe Drop, every protocol that ZALA prescribes is tagged against one of these nine. The Rail tag is how the engine reads the universe of human practice — and how the Superuser routes the right work to the right Member.
The pyramid · 3 + 3 + 3
The nine are not a flat list. They are a pyramid — three tiers of three rails each, stacked from substrate to orientation. The geometry locked 2026-05-15.
Spirit
Mind
Body
The pyramid reads bottom-up. Body is the substrate. Mind is the practice. Spirit is the orientation. You don't get to "spirit" without the body holding. You don't get to "skills" without the rails of the body and the mind functioning. The architecture is causal, not equal.
Why nine
The count is locked at nine as of 2026-05-15. Older athlete-plan documents — and an "8 Habit Categories" list that circulated in operational docs — are retired. The differences:
- Connection → Social. Same domain, canonical name.
- Recovery → split between Body and Sleep. Recovery is not a rail; it is a Body-and-Sleep combination read.
- Environmental and Skills added back in. The 8-category list dropped these. They are core to the operating system, not optional.
The fractal math depends on the count holding. Nine rails × three categories = 12, which is the month-shape of the year. The annual closes when all nine have been touched, in their tiered order, across the 12 months of the infinite game.
Why "rails" and not "categories"
Most platforms call this "categories" or "pillars." ZALA calls them rails on purpose. The rails note 2026-05-14 names the choice:
Rails — boundaries that never change. Keep you from going / falling overboard.
Categories are descriptive. They tell you what you did. Rails are functional. They tell you what you can't drift past. A category is a shelf. A rail is a guardrail. The semantic difference is the entire doctrine.
The rails do not change. Member to Member, year to year, sport to sport — the nine remain. What changes is the weight applied to each rail at any given moment for any given Member. That's the engine's work, not the rail's.
How rails tag
Every output of the platform carries a Rail tag.
- Every habit is tagged against one (or more) of the nine.
- Every routine is tagged against the rails it touches.
- Every Vibe Drop the engine drafts is tagged against the rails it serves.
- Every Superuser action — send, edit, dismiss — is tagged against the rail it touches.
- Every Member's longitudinal record reads as a 9-dimensional history.
The Superuser daily drops cycle through the rails on an ordinal rotation (today's rail = ordinal index 0–8 mod 9). The platform's content calendar runs on the rail rotation. You can't talk about all nine at once — but you can touch them all in nine days.
The UI note · "Train" vs "Body"
On the Superuser web portal, the Body rail is labeled "Train" — a presentational rename for the practitioner audience. The backend tag, the doctrine vocabulary, and the Member-facing surfaces all stay Body. Don't conflate the count. Don't introduce a tenth.
What this refuses
- The flat 8. Retired. Older athlete-plan PDFs that show eight habit categories are prior-doctrine artifacts.
- The flat list. The pyramid is the geometry. Listing the nine without the tiering loses the architecture.
- Adding a tenth. The fractal math depends on nine. Adding a "Recovery" rail breaks it; recovery is a read on Body + Sleep.
- Confusing rails with anchors. At the day scale, rails compress to five daily anchors (see Six Time Gates for the daily compression). At the lifetime scale, they expand back to nine.
